“I got a lot of things going on in my life that I didn’t really know were going on with my family,” he says.
“I had a girlfriend at the time, but I didn ‘t know what that was like.
So I was looking for someone else, and I wanted to find a new girl.”
He found one, a college girlfriend of his at the University of Virginia, a woman who was a little more comfortable with a new car and had a lot more disposable income.
“She wanted to drive.
She was a smart, intelligent girl,” he recalls.
The couple married in November 2011, and after a year together, they were moving into their new house in a quiet suburb of Charlottesville, Virginia.
He had an older brother and a younger sister, and she had a younger cousin, but the two of them didn’t interact much.
The relationship was one-sided.
He’d show up late at night, spend his nights watching TV, and then drive home to pick up their children, and they’d drive around the neighborhood until the sun came up.
“She’d say, ‘No, it’s just time to go to sleep,’ and I’d say: ‘No it’s time to be ready to go,'” he recalls, adding, “And then we would drive off to sleep.”
For years, he says, “she was doing everything she could to make sure that I stayed here.
We did laundry, made sure she was taking care of herself.
She’d ask me about anything, and it was all I could do to not say no.”
After a year of moving in together, the two began dating and eventually married in April 2013.
“It was a lot to take in at first,” he tells me.
“But she was a good mom, she’d do things for us.”
For more than a decade, he had been a truck driver for a variety of companies, including Ford, Honda, Jeep, and others.
Then, in late 2014, he moved to a different trucking company in Georgia.
For a year, he and his wife worked at various trucking companies before settling on F150 lease companies.
“My wife wanted to go back to school,” he remembers.
“We were looking for a place that would let us go back.
We didn’t know what we wanted, but we did the best we could.”
In the fall of 2016, he started leasing cars.
He knew it would be a challenge, but he wanted to be a part of it.
He had a $1,000 deposit and was looking to lease a 2016 Ford F150.
He and his girlfriend were driving to their house in the fall when they noticed some of the trucks in their driveway.
They knew they were getting a new truck, but they were surprised by what was going on behind the scenes.
“I thought, Wow, we’re in trouble,” he explains.
“Then I looked over at my wife and I said, ‘What the hell are you doing here?
You’re driving a truck!'”
She said, “What are you talking about?
You want to be driving the truck?””
She was like, ‘Oh, yeah, we wanted a new F150,'” he says with a laugh.
“So I started working on it, and we did some paperwork.
We called it the F150-lease business.
The F150, we were leasing it, was the one we needed.”
When the deal was signed, they both got their lease in the mail.
They then got their new F250 pickup.
They had a few questions about it.
“What is this for?
What’s the deal with this?” he recalls his wife asking him.
He was already working on his next truck, and he was already thinking about what he wanted for his family.
“We went back and forth about it,” he admits.
“And I said: ‘Why are you trying to get into this?
Why do you want to lease it?
What is the deal?
We’ll talk about it later.'”
The lease company was willing to take on the work, so the couple set up an appointment to have a lease negotiation, and both men were on the phone with their leasing company.
“It was about a month later, that we were at a meeting and the guy on the other end of the phone said, I don’t have an idea about this, but here’s the F-150,” he said.
“He had it on his desk.
I looked at the lease and there was no mention of it.”
They then went to another meeting and it came up again.
This time the lease wasn’t mentioned.
“That’s when we were like, I’m not going to have any idea what’s going on, and that was when we got a hold of a lot less information,” he continues.
“A lot of the information that we had was wrong.
There was no paperwork, there was
